If you are assembling your own emergency supplies kit, instead of buying one preassembled, you need to find the right items. To help us, The Wirecutter has done the job of deciding what a kit should contain and also tested lots of different products to find the best ones.

They have divided the needs into seven categories:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Health and hygiene
  • Light and heat
  • Communication and power
  • Tools
  • Storage

I like how they explain why they prefer one product over another. For instance, I learned that blue water containers lowers the risk of bacteria growing:

”Rigid water containers made of blue polyethylene consistently perform better than opaque collapsible ones for both storage (they offer more durability and leak resistance, and prevent bacterial growth) and pouring.”

Having water, being able to make fire anywhere and a radio to stay informed are among the most important things to always have at home. Blue water containers and a good radio is on my list. 🙂
